I
sought help from the R.B.A.C. following a conversation with my M.D.
internist about my need for exercise to reduce stress and the necessity
of using natural means to improve my fragile health. My body does
not tolerate drug prescriptions.
What follows are some comments on the effects of
my initial six weeks of Qigong exercise (Sept. 27-Nov. 1, 2002.)
1. Most amazing to me was the sense of well-being
the gentle exercises immediately produced. I, who have a long history
of “no energy,” actually find myself stronger after
each exercise period. My energy level steadily improves daily.
(This is
the first exercise program of my life.)
2. Lessening of physical and emotional
stress arising from long-term health problems. I feel better
on Nov. 1 than
I did on Sept. 27.
3. Coordinating breathing and physical movement
was another “eye opener.” Tenseness of the chest area caused
by shallow breathing is fading and my legs feel less like “rubbery
Jello.” These effects are improving my balance while
standing and walking, especially on outdoor surfaces.
4. Negative cultural attitudes
toward aging and declining energy tend to evade my usual self-confidence.
Qigong exploration
and practice have proven a wonderful antidote to such prejudice
and
negative thinking experienced by this 79-year old person of
the female sex. The
exercise program develops independence, an asset at any age.
5. Last, but really first, is the fun of
Qigong. I look forward to my instruction period with Shoshanna and the
follow-up of daily exercising. Each new movement learned brings the happy
surprise of “I can do that!” I am riding the wave
of better health.
Appreciatively,
Alvina Johnston
